VENGABOYS INTERVIEW IN THE INDIAN EXPRESS
Vengaboys live in India: We Still Like to Party
Four-member Dutch outfit Vengaboys are on a three-city tour in India, to carry on the party they started way back in the ’90s.
It has been over a decade since you last toured India. What do you remember of your first experience here?
India is a land of contradictions, with the beauty, the rich and the poor all living footsteps apart from each other. That left a big impression on us.
Vengaboys was a sensation in India. Why have we not heard from you for so many years?
We have been busy touring across Europe. That’s why we didn’t get time to release a full-length album worldwide. But we did make some new tunes. Hope you like them.
EDM beats that seem to have become ubiquitous today?
Well, we have already used EDM (electronic dance music). In our single, titled Hot Hot Hot, we used some EDM beats, as also in the remix of 2 Brazil. Although we come from a different pop era, it’s good to evolve with the music scene of today.
When you look back, what do you think made Vengaboys so successful?
We think it was just the perfect timing, our deep lyrics and life’s philosophy.
You also perform covers as part of your live set. Could you tell us what your performances are like now?
Rather then being a ’90s act, we see ourselves more as a party act. It’s fun to combine our old songs with party tunes.
Could you give us a little back story about Boom Boom Boom? Boom Boom Boom, I want you in my room!
That sentence says enough, doesn’t it?
It’s a little heartbreaking to see our childhood pop stars perform in a Mumbai mall. How does the group deal with the kind of bookings you get today?
We just make the most of it — whether it’s in a mall, club or arena. We come to party and that’s what we’ll do.
Anything you look forward to doing in India that you missed out on last time?
Last time we were in India, we didn’t visit Goa. We’ve heard awesome stories, so we’re glad to have one extra day, to spend there.
Vengaboys will perform in Mumbai, Chennai and Goa on May 8, 9 and 10 respectively.
